For those just entering into an appreciation of Gyokuro green teas, there is no better teacher than Karigane Kukicha. Made from stems of the highest-grade Gyokuro, grown shaded with wara (river weeds) and nourished by the Ujita River, this tea captures the varietal’s famed essence at a fraction of the cost. The award-winning Nishikawa nursery in Kyoto hand harvested this batch in Spring 2015, and only a small quantity is available. Please be attentive when steeping—a water temperature above 150° F will corrupt its brothy, sweet-savory flavor.
