Handmade Antique Bizenware 'Chawan' Matcha Bowl
This product is unavailable
A collector's item, this matcha bowl is a type of Bizenware- wood kiln fired, hard, reddish brown pottery without glaze, from one of the oldest kilns and pottery techniques of ancient Japan. Pine ash and other natural kiln effects make this a very spontaneous and beautiful raw effect. Chawan, or matcha bowls, have a special place in the tea culture of Japan, being the center piece most admired for its symbolism, artistic merit, and conveyance of sentiment from the host of the tea ceremony to their guests.
Probably as old as 1920s, this was a rare bowl found in Kyoto, and has the typical feel of wabi sabi, the art of perfection through imperfection.
