It takes a particular marriage of people, place and pests to create this beautifully bewildering tea. Its mysterious flavors (even our most astute tasters can’t quite put their tongues on them) are the result of a unique alchemy between Shinjhu’s terroir, the superior dedication of the Hakka tribe—who naturally oxidize their teas under the hottest, most humid conditions despite personal discomfort—and the nibbling of leaf hopper cicadas. Carefully overseen by a Hakka tea master from picking to packing, the finished tea is robust, spicy, honeyed, devoid of astringency, richly aromatic and wonderfully strange.
This summer's Premium Grade Taiwan Beauty is a bit low on the amount of leaf buds bitten by the leaf hoppers, and is a heavier and darker with less fragrance and sweetness than last year's crop. Enjoy it for its coppery tones and candied fruit flavors.
