Often reserved for traditional tea ceremonies—it’s approved by the grandmaster of the Urasenke School of Chanoyu—this higher-grade Koicha (thick matcha) from the Marukyu-Koyama En company never bows to the bitterness typical of lesser-quality marketplace matchas. Its soft, deeply complex flavors, velvety green color and delicate, fresh fragrance gives way to an intense, lingering umami-rich finish. Prepare a bowl of Choan, or “Long Peace” in Japanese, to create a calming, ritual space in your day—with or without the tatami teahouse.

Koicha is used in Japanese tea ceremony to make tea with a very thick consistency. Because of the very high ratio of matcha to water, koicha matcha must be cultivated and produced from only the very best, fresh young tea leaves.
