History:
Oolongs have grown
in the high mountains of Anxi for a long time as the indigenous She
people migrated up Fujian, bringing their seeds of tea with them.
Tikuanyin bushes were discovered in the 1700s by a scholar who found
them wild, and subsequently, a whole sub-varietal was created, which
the emperor at the time named the ‘Iron Bodhissattva’ or Tie Guan
Yin(China spelling). Today, Tikuanyin is one of the most highly
prized and revered oolongs in the world.
Character:
Tikuanyin leaves are
generally fleshier, thicker than most oolongs, with a distinct
fragrance and body called ‘yun’, a sort of musical note like quality
that describes the ethereal quality of the taste of Tikuanyin.
