Description

Born in 1943, in Guangdong China, Chitfu Yu began his artistic destiny at age nine. Never formally educated in art, Chitfu nurtured and developed his natural artistic ability with endless practice and study. After graduating from South China University in 1966 with a BA in Chinese literature, he spent long years traveling throughout China. He developed a keen sensitivity and understanding of Eastern philosophy which would be reflected in his oil abstractions many years later. He left China in 1975 and moved to Hong Kong before immigrating to the United States in 1978.

Chitfu Yu's traditional Chinese paintings are about freedom, about gripping the emotions behind a painting while capturing a moment in time and space. He concentrates on landscapes, figures and calligraphy, building from a deep foundation of Eastern philosophy. Using large sweeps of forceful and unrestrained brush strokes to create a painting's structure, he then develops his images with fine detail so to carefully convey the main themes behind each work. His composition is simple but strong, his usage of ink is bold and decisive, and most importantly, the heavy contrast between the frontal and background planes of space provide a unique rhythm to his art. The contemporary Western style of painting that Chitfu Yu pursued came from the deeply rooted background of Eastern thought and way of life. Rather than combining the technical and visual aspects of Chinese art into his Western paintings, he chose an approach that drives the impulsive eruption of emotions and self _expression into the canvas while still upholding the theories of dynamic balance and contrast that is so valuable in Eastern thought. Without forcing his work into traditional Eastern or Western structures, Chitfu allows the chaos and excess of modern life to be firmly balanced within the play of yin and yang. Raw emotion is channeled with ritual discipline. Preconceived images are abandoned. Feelings take form, forms take color, colors take sides, and battles are waged as the canvas weaves organic stories of a man uprooted, of a family displaced, of a new life begun. Every painting is a record, a reflection, of the movements of the artist. He challenges the viewer to read his story and to travel the dimensions of dissonance and harmony, or war and peace. And within this abstraction is his pursuit of complete freedom.
