Black teas (Hongcha in original Chinese, meaning Red Tea) are full bodied, 'brisk' tasting, darker teas resulting from full oxidization through a rolling or tearing process. Because the final liquid is rouge colored, in China these are called red teas. The West refers to them as black teas, describing the darkened appearance of the withered leaves. Whole leaf and handmade black teas are actually very moderate in caffeine, especially compared to coffee, though they do have a higher caffeine content than green and white teas. Cut leaf or BOP black teas will tend to have more caffeine released into the cup.
