Description

Baisao - Life and Zen Poetry in 18th Century Kyoto
The Old Tea Seller
Translated by Norman Waddell

Baisao was an inspirational and unconventional poet and Buddhist priest that left the constrictions of temple life to make a living selling tea on the streets of Kyoto.  Though he would never purport to be a Zen master, his clientele, which consisted of influential artists, poets, and thinkers of the time, considered a trip to his tea shop to be of religious importance.

This book includes virtually all of Baisao's writings translated for the first time in English, together with the first biography on Baisao. It is bound to establish Baisao's place alongside other Zen-inspired poets such as Basho and Ryokan.
