Storage of Tea

Tea should be stored in airtight containers away from heat, moisture, and exposure to light to ensure the longevity of the leaf.

All teas, except
Pu-erhs, are best when enjoyed as soon as possible after its harvest period.  Green teas are most perishable. If stored properly and in relatively cool environments, Green teas can stay fresh from 6 months to a year. It is advisable to store Green Teas in the produce section of your refrigerator if you live in a warm climate.  Try not to buy more White and Green tea than you will drink within three months, Oolong within six months, and Black/Red tea within a year. Teas do not spoil, but they lose their aroma and taste over time as they are exposed to light, air, and humidity, tasting somewhat 'flat'. Keep all teas stored in a dark, cool, dry place in an airtight container, and you will find they retain their freshness much longer.

The best containers are made of porcelain, and next, stainless steel.  Good airtight plastic containers that do not let light in are also acceptable.  Although bamboo or wood may be attractive, they are often not very airtight.  See
storage containers.
