Perhaps only once in a generation does a work come along in this specialized field that has the compelling power and grace of Norman Waddell's new book. A masterful translation and presentation of the delightfully original 18th-century Japanese Zen priest-cum-tea merchant Baisao ("old tea seller"), this volume of poems, letters, biography, and commentary now stands alongside Okakura Kakuzo' early-20th century classic, The Book of Tea, as a key text mapping the fluid intersection of tea, Buddhism, and Taoism.
Nelson Foster is a noted author and Zen teacher, a dharma heir of Robert Aitken Roshi. With Jack Shoemaker he edited The Roaring Stream-A New Zen Reader, which includes a chapter on Baisao with some of Norman Waddell's earlier translations.
Baisao was among the first proponents of infused whole leaf green teas at a time when matcha, the powdered green tea of chanoyu, was prevalent in Japan. In honor of his own taste, garden-direct green teas from China and Japan will be served.
Hardcover copies of the book will be available at Teance for purchase during the event for $20, regularly priced at $24. Don't miss this special event, which will be both a treasure to experience and share with friends!
